“Born to the most precious bloodline, this boy was never allowed to decide anything for himself. Come close and see how a gentle person is crushed by the times.”
Life
Heir of the Toyotomi
Ambition
Uphold the Taikō’s final instructions, resist Tokugawa pressure, and assert the Toyotomi house’s sovereignty before the realm.
He bears the impregnable Osaka Castle and vast treasure left by his father Hideyoshi. As Hideyoshi’s son, he must preserve a ruler’s dignity and never become a Tokugawa vassal.
If he accepts the Tokugawa demand to attend court in Edo, the Toyotomi will fall to the rank of an ordinary lord and eventually be abolished.
- Ieyasu’s cunning schemes and overwhelming military pressure
- The conflict inside Osaka Castle between his mother Yodo’s circle and the military faction
- The daimyo across the realm turn toward the Tokugawa, leaving him isolated
Character and convictions
His legitimate bloodline as the Taikō’s eldest son and the Toyotomi’s dignity as rulers of Japan.
The helplessness of being unable to act when his domain was reduced to 650,000 koku after Sekigahara, fought after his father’s death.
His gratitude and affection for Sanada Nobushige and the masterless samurai who stood with the Toyotomi to the end.
Submitting to the Tokugawa and surrendering the Osaka Castle his father built.

Hideyori fled to a storehouse in Ashida Bailey of Yamazato Bailey, where he died by his own hand with his mother Yodo and close retainers. He vanished with the castle, ending the Toyotomi house at twenty-three.
“Born at the summit of the realm and revered by all, the young noble scarcely knew the world beyond his castle. At twenty-three, he was reduced to ashes with the golden fortress his father left him.”
