Life

Oda’s all-purpose elder retainer

Ambition

Perfect the logistics and fortifications behind Nobunaga’s campaign to unify the realm and make the Oda administration secure.

Many commanders boast of spectacular victories, but an army can conquer the realm only when someone performs essential daily work as reliably as rice.

If supplies, transport, or castle construction fail, the Oda expansion will quickly collapse under its own logistical burden.

Obstacles of the era
  • The unprecedented scale and difficulty of building Azuchi Castle
  • The enormous transport burden of supplying armies on several fronts
  • Rivalries among senior retainers and Nobunaga’s relentless demands

Final chapter

1585 (aged 51)

After Honnōji, he supported Hideyoshi and became lord of Echizen, a domain of 1.2 million koku. Years of stomach illness worsened, and in Tenshō 13 he died at Kitanoshō Castle, aged 51.

A later tale says that, suffering from abdominal illness, he cut open his own belly, removed a tumor, and sent it to Hideyoshi.
“He built the Oda realm’s storehouse for Nobunaga and, in the struggle between Shibata and Hideyoshi, chose practical advantage and helped raise Hideyoshi to supremacy. Yet this capable man fell ill and died before he could see the realm he had helped build brought to completion.”
