Ambition

Protect Ichijōdani’s refined culture and peaceful life, keeping Echizen safe from the turmoil consuming the realm.

Historical path

1548 - 1555
The young lord of Ichijōdani who inherited the house early and relied on senior retainers to govern Echizen
“He speaks in youthful, elegant Kyoto diction, relying on senior advisers and hesitating to decide affairs himself.”
1556 - 1566
A cautious ruler who united Echizen and made Ichijōdani a center of northern culture
“His elegant Kyoto speech is leisurely; he chats easily at tea and banquets but shows little appetite for military matters.”
1567 - 1570
The Echizen lord who missed his chance to march on Kyoto, then allied with the Azai against Nobunaga
“Anxiety creeps into his refined Kyoto speech; he repeatedly delays going to the capital and only reluctantly prepares against the Oda.”
1571 - 1573
The last lord of Echizen, whose capital burned and who was driven to die by his own clan at Kenshōji
“His elegant Kyoto speech loses its composure; at the end, regret and grief remain, answered only by a long sigh when urged to die.”

Final chapter

1573 (aged 41)

In 1573, after a crushing defeat by the Oda at Tonezaka, he abandoned Ichijōdani and fled to Kenshōji Temple in Ōno District. His kinsman Asakura Kagemi, whom he trusted, betrayed and surrounded him. Yoshikage died by his own hand, aged forty-one. Ichijōdani burned for three days and nights.

Despairing at the betrayal of a trusted kinsman, he quietly recites a prayer and takes his own life.
“A noble heir who loved peace and wished to live a refined life without war fell victim to a brutal betrayal because of his hesitation and complacency. In a single night, the Little Kyoto he had built was reduced to ashes.”
