Life

Lady of Osaka Castle

Ambition

Defy the age that took her father, mother, and adoptive father, and protect Hideyori and the Toyotomi house at all costs.

She endured the falls of Odani and Kitanoshō castles and saw both parents die in the flames. Hideyori, the beloved son she bore to Hideyoshi, became her whole life. She would let no one take his claim to rule.

If she submits to the Tokugawa, Hideyori will be killed or confined, and the Azai, Oda, and Toyotomi lineages will be extinguished.

Obstacles of the era
  • Ieyasu’s shrewd siege of Osaka and his demand that its moats be filled
  • Divisions between Ōno Harunaga’s inner circle and rōnin such as Sanada Nobushige
  • The fear and strain of cannon fire against Osaka Castle’s keep

Character and convictions

Source of ambition

Her beloved son Toyotomi Hideyori, whom she must protect at any cost, and the noble pride inherited from her mother Oichi.

Turning point

The double nightmare of losing her father Nagamasa at Odani in childhood and watching her mother Oichi take her life at Kitanoshō in her youth.

How he treats others

An almost blind and protective love for Hideyori.

Principle he will not yield

Yielding to Tokugawa demands and sending Hideyori to Edo as a hostage.

Final chapter

1582 (aged 49)

On the 8th day of the 5th month, Keichō 20 (1615), Osaka Castle fell during the Summer Siege of Osaka. As the keep burned, she took her own life with Hideyori and Ōno Harunaga in a storehouse at Yamazatomaru, driving a short sword into her chest beside her son. The source gives her age as 47 (or 49).

“Hideyori, I will not leave you alone,” she said, embracing him as she calmly accepted the blade amid the flames.
Her castles were burned three times, and like her parents she died in the flames beside her beloved son. Though later generations called her wicked and arrogant, she was a mother who struggled to protect her child to the very end.
